Athens Helicopter Transfer — Athens to the Islands in 25 Minutes

May 26, 2026 · 6 min read · FFGR Greece Aviation Team

The Aegean presents a logistical paradox for the private traveller: the most beautiful destinations are also the hardest to reach by ground. Santorini is 250 kilometres from Athens by direct line; by ferry, it is eight hours. By helicopter, it is 55 minutes. For principals who need to be in Oia for a 7 pm dinner and are leaving an Athens board meeting at 4 pm, the helicopter is not a luxury — it is the only option. FFGR Greece coordinates helicopter transfers across the Aegean through our exclusive partnerships with certified operators.

Athens Operations — The Helipad Network

Greater Athens has four primary helipads used for private passenger transfers: the Athens International Airport GA apron (coordinated with ATC), the Faliro coastal helipad, the rooftop facility at the Divani Caravel Hotel, and the private estate helipads that certain large Athenian properties maintain under Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority approval.

We coordinate departure timing with the Athens ATC office to ensure NOTAM compliance and the shortest possible ground delay. Our standard Athens-to-island programme: vehicle at the client's hotel at 4:00 pm, helipad at 4:20 pm, wheels up at 4:30 pm. For a Santorini landing, the client is stepping into our island vehicle by 5:25 pm, in time for pre-dinner preparations.

Island Helipad Coordination

Every major island maintains a helipad. Santorini's is located at the southern tip of the island, near the village of Akrotiri — 18 kilometres from Oia, which represents a 28-minute drive on the main island road. Our Santorini driver departs for the helipad 35 minutes before the scheduled landing, allowing for the inevitable summer afternoon traffic that builds on the southern access road after 4 pm.

Mykonos has a dedicated helipad near the New Port, accessible directly from our vehicle without a walk. Rhodes maintains a helipad adjacent to the main airport. Corfu's helipad is inside the airport perimeter with a dedicated VIP exit. We have operated all of these routes and our timing protocols are built on 200+ actual transfers, not estimates.

Seamless Door-to-Door Coordination

The value of a coordinated helicopter-and-chauffeur programme is that the client never experiences a gap. From the moment they leave the Athens hotel room to the moment they are seated at dinner in Santorini, there is one FFGR Greece contact number, one briefed team, and one chain of custody for luggage and schedule. We do not sub-contract the ground component to a local operator and then hope the timing aligns.

Our operations centre in Athens coordinates the full programme in real time. If the helicopter is held for 20 minutes at Athens ATC, the Santorini driver receives the revised ETA automatically. The client receives a single message: "Slight ATC delay, new arrival at 5:40 pm — your Santorini driver has been updated." That is the entire communication. The rest is managed silently.
