Eastern Macedonia's Jewel
Kavala — ancient Neapolis, where the Apostle Paul first set foot in Europe — sits on a crescent bay beneath its imposing Byzantine castle, with an Ottoman aqueduct marching across the valley behind. The old city, built on the castle promontory, contains tobacco warehouses from the early 20th century now converted to restaurants and cultural spaces. It is one of the most atmospheric cities in northern Greece.
Thassos — The Green Island
A 40-minute ferry from Kavala, Thassos is Greece's northernmost island and one of its most unusual: covered in pine forest descending to the sea, with ancient marble quarries (used for the Parthenon's metopes), crystalline water at Marble Beach and Giola natural pool, and a village culture more Macedonian than Aegean. FFGR Greece coordinates the ferry crossing and ground transport on the island.
