Delphi occupies a position on the slopes of Mount Parnassos that the ancient Greeks believed to be the centre of the world. The Delphic Oracle delivered prophecies that shaped the decisions of kings for a thousand years. The site — the Temple of Apollo, the theatre, the Tholos at the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia — commands a view over the valley of olive trees to the Gulf of Corinth that has not materially changed since antiquity. FFGR Greece makes Delphi an Athens day trip.
Athens to Delphi
The drive takes two hours and forty minutes: the Corinth motorway west, then the mountain road north through Arachova. The final 30 kilometres through Arachova — a ski village in winter, famous for local cheese — is part of the experience. We programme a 20-minute stop for the view over the Corinthian Gulf.
Departure from Athens at 7:30 am places the vehicle at Delphi before 10:30 am — when the site is still relatively uncrowded. The Delphi Museum, which holds the Bronze Charioteer and the Omphalos stone, requires one and a half hours at a reasonable pace.
The Site and Museum
The Sacred Way rises steeply through a sequence of treasuries before reaching the Temple of Apollo. Above the temple, the ancient theatre commands a view of the entire valley. We time the visit for the morning light, which illuminates the valley and the columns from the east.
The Delphi Museum should be visited after the site — the artefacts make more sense once the spatial layout of the sanctuary is understood. The Bronze Charioteer, one of the finest surviving ancient bronzes, occupies a dedicated gallery.
