Meteora — Greek for "suspended in air" — is one of the most visually extraordinary places in Europe. Six Eastern Orthodox monasteries, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, cling to the top of vertical rock pillars that rise 400 metres above the Thessalian plain. UNESCO listed them in 1988. FFGR Greece provides private ground transport from Athens or Thessaloniki, timed for the golden-hour light of early morning.
Athens or Thessaloniki to Meteora
The distance from Athens to Kalambaka is 355 kilometres — three and a half hours on the E65 motorway north. From Thessaloniki, it is 215 kilometres south — two and a half hours. We programme overnight stays for clients who wish to experience both sunrise and sunset light on the rocks.
The Divani Meteora Hotel provides the closest accommodation to the monasteries with views of the rock pillars directly from the rooms.
The Monastery Circuit
The Great Meteoron opens at 9 am in summer. We arrive at the summit road at 7 am — before the gates open — to observe the monasteries in full morning light without tour groups. The monasteries are typically at capacity by 11 am.
All monasteries require covered arms and legs. Women require skirts; trousers are not permitted. We brief clients on this requirement and carry lightweight scarves and wraps in the vehicle as standard.
Athens–Meteora–Thessaloniki Circuit
Meteora sits almost exactly at the midpoint between Athens and Thessaloniki. A three-day programme: Day 1, drive from Athens (3.5 hours). Day 2, full monastery circuit at sunrise. Day 3, drive north to Thessaloniki (2.5 hours), arriving in time for dinner at the waterfront.
